What is a Commercial Access Control System?

An Electronic Access Control System (EACS) is a digital security infrastructure designed to manage physical entry into a commercial facility or specific internal zones. An enterprise access control system serves as an intelligence engine that captures and logs continuous event data across single-site or multi-location facilities.

Commercial access control systems assist facilities across SEQ answer three primary questions:

  • Who is requesting entry?
  • When are they attempting to gain access?
  • Where within the facility is access being requested?

By logging this data, building owners, facility managers, and enterprise operations teams can maintain a complete, verifiable audit trail.

Components of an Enterprise Access Control System

Rabone Systems engineers complete commercial access control environments tailored to site-specific buildings from Maroochydore to South Port.

Entry Terminals

User-facing hardware mounted at access points—including intercoms, RFID card readers, biometric scanners (fingerprint or facial recognition), and mobile credential interfaces.

Access Controllers

The local decision engine at the door, processing inputs (Door Position Sensors, Request to Exit buttons, break-glass units) and executing real-time outputs (releasing locks, sounding local alarms, or signaling video systems)

Locking Hardware

Electronic locking mechanisms, including electric strikes, electromagnetic locks (maglocks), and electronic mortise locks.

Control Software

The management platform responsible for hardware commissioning, cardholder database administration, operator access privileges, and audit log

How Does Access Control Grant User Permissions?

By establishing distinct cardholder profiles, Rabone Systems designs structured access control architectures that assign clear physical entry privileges across all operating scenarios:

Occupants & Staff

During operational hours, general cardholders need frictionless access through entries, turnstiles, and doors. Credentials restrict movement to designated work zones and shared spaces, preventing access to unauthorised zones.

Multi-Tenant Facilities

Base-building operations can either manage tenant access directly or accommodate individual company admins without compromising site security. Modular architecture allows tenants to administer credentials for assigned doors only while restricting entry to neighboring tenancies and critical infrastructure.

Visitors & Contractors

Visitors and contractors require strictly bounded access to perform on-site duties. Temporary credentials restrict access to specific time windows, dates, or entry points to confine movement to designated areas only.

Executive & Emergency Personnel

Assigned to facility managers, emergency responders, and executive staff, high-privilege credentials grant master clearance across perimeter entries, elevator floors, and critical utility zones.

What Access Options Are Available and What Are Their Trade-Offs?

Mobile Credentials (NFC & Bluetooth)

High user convenience using iOS or Android devices. Requires a charged phone.

Biometrics (Fingerprint & Facial Recognition)

Maximum security with an uncompromised audit trail. Credentials cannot be shared, traded, or stolen.

PIN Keypads

Low-cost entry mechanisms. PINs must be rotated regularly across tenant groups to prevent code sharing.

Physical Credentials (Cards & Key Fobs)

Highly durable with low failure rates. However, physical cards can be lost or passed to unauthorized individuals, compromising log accuracy.

What Locking Options Are There and How Are They Different?

Electric Strikes:

Installed directly into the door frame, electric strikes release an internal lip to clear the latch bolt upon authorization. They offer the most cost-effective, practical solution for standard office doors.

Electromagnetic Locks (Maglocks):

Maglocks provide a reliable locking solution for glass doors where standard hardware cannot be recessed. Operating independently of door handles, they require secondary exit-side break-glass switches to sever power in case of emergency.

V-Locks & Drop Bolts:

Drop bolts drop a vertical pin into a floor plate and require exact door alignment to engage. V-Locks feature an angled latching design that tolerates door misalignment up to 5mm.

Electronic Mortise Locks:

Housed directly inside the door assembly, electronic mortise locks deliver high-security while preserving door aesthetics. Installation requires drilling through the door core and fitting  hinges to route cabling —costing up to three times more than an electric strike.

When Should You Upgrade Your Access Control System?

Rabone Systems recommend building owners and facility managers initiate a site review when experiencing:

Legacy Proximity Cards

Relying on 125 kHz Prox or unencrypted CSN credentials exposes your site to duplication using off-the-shelf handheld cloners. Modernizing to encrypted readers restores integrity and eliminates cloning risks.

Unmonitored Openings

Perimeter and automatic doors operating without true Door Position Sensors (DPS) leave management unaware if doors fail to lock after hours or are forcibly held open.

Ghost Credentials

Unmaintained databases allow former staff, contractors, or tenants to retain active physical access. Upgrading provides a structured cutover to purge legacy databases and reissue verified, role-based credentials

Unreliable Audit Trails

Operators find themselves unable to extract verified, time-stamped event logs (Who, When, Where) following a physical incident—compromising post-event accountability and exposing the asset to compliance liability.

Disjointed Security Systems

Running access control and intrusion alarms as isolated platforms forces staff to manage duplicate PINs rather than automatically disarming secure zones via authorized credentials.

How Do Modern Access Control Systems Reduce Cost?

Enterprise access control lowers operational overhead by streamlining multi-tenant administration, reducing manual security staffing, and integrating directly with Destination Control Systems (DCS) for optimized elevator routing.

By eliminating standalone server hardware and transitioning to cloud-managed architecture, facilities eliminate local server maintenance, public certificate management, and port-forwarding overhead. Centralized database management streamlines onboarding and offboarding, allowing operators to purge legacy "ghost" credentials instantaneously across multiple sites without local re-enrollment delays.
